I had an awesome time signing my custom designed Elvis posters on January 12th at the Pearl Harbor Visitors Center.  January 10-15th is the “Aloha from Hawaii” 40th Anniversary Celebration.  This marks 40 years since Elvis Presley played his last concert here in Hawaii.  All kinds of Elvis-themed events are planned, culminating with a replaying of the original concert on the big screen at the Blaisdell Arena. Thanks to Pacific Historic Parks and The Elvis Foundation for an opportunity to create this commemorative poster!  I was blown away by some of the obscure Elvis trivia the fans knew.   Elvis fans here had ties to Graceland, Tupelo, and cities that Elvis toured when they were younger- A very exciting time for the them taking a once in a lifetime vacation to Hawaii.   My favorite shirt of day was a Hawaii-themed Elvis shirt that said “Mahalo. Mahalo very much.”

Another fact you may not have known (I learned A LOT of Elvis facts, along with listening to hours of Elvis on Spotify) is that the king played his first concert in Hawaii in 1961 to benefit the USS Arizona Memorial. I was really impressed with everything he did to bring awareness and also raise funds for the memorial.

Yes, in the early ’80s, scratch paper and pencils were in high demand in Daytona Beach, Florida.  Well, my mom tracked down some of those “works” and scanned them for me.  The earliest starting at 2 1/2 years old.  Enjoy!

Horse – 2 1/2 years old – This is the earliest drawing I have of mine.  It’s titled “Horse”.  Looks more like a smug alien, but pretty rad, nonetheless.

Cars- 3 yrs. old-   It appears I was well ahead of my time with some sort of train/automobile combo?  The second one looks like a house on wheels (Cars with door-KNOBS instead of handles; now THAT’S an idea.)

Car #2 – 3 years old – I was fan of VW buses at an early age.

Truck – 3 years old -Looks like a semi-truck with wagon wheels.  I must’ve been making a social commentary on the juxtaposition of old world travel and new world commerce.  Plus, it has TWO signatures on it!

Robot – 4 years old -I was drawing some inspiration from Transformers on this one.

I’m very grateful I had parents that supported and encouraged me along the way.  If your kid loves to draw, create, or whatever- encourage them & have plenty of blank paper around the house!

As an artist and designer, it’s not often you have a client that says- “Do whatever you want!”  In the case of Hendrick’s they did just that.  Dave from Hendrick’s (Who has the rad title of “Commander of Special Operations”) contacted me one day and basically said “Hey, I love your design style; let’s do an event together!”  I started the collaboration by designing him a fictional map of the “World of Hendrick’s” to which I believe he commented- “This made my brain spray out of my ears!”  I assumed that meant I was on the right track. 

I had an awesome time creating some delightful pieces for them that have a great vintage & whimsical feel.  Hope you enjoy them too!
